The David Heller Center for
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

The Foundation funds research focused on the cause, diagnosis and potential prevention of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) through the David Heller Center for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy at the Providence Heart Institute.

We are committed to continue funding research as part of our mission to save lives and promote teen heart health. The foundation has provided $200,000 in funding to date.

Recent updates

  • A nurse coordinator has been hired to help streamline referrals, order appropriate testing prior to the clinic visit, and to be the first point of contact for most of our HCM patients. This improves patient care and satisfaction.
  • The Center is now the site for a new HCM drug trial, MAPLE – HCM. This study is the largest phase 3 drug trial for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and is the first time this class of drug has been compared to standard of care. By offering access to Aficamten the Heller Center offers every treatment option (medically and procedurally) available for treatment of obstructive HCM.
  • The Center is also in the process of becoming a trial site for ACACIA–HCM. This trial is also studying Aficamten, but in the non-obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy cohort. This is a huge unmet need and will help a lot of patients in this group who have very limited treatment options.

ABOUT THE CENTER

The multidisciplinary team at The David Heller Center for Cardiomyopathy provides the most comprehensive and cutting edge care for patients and their families having either a diagnosis of, or concern for HCM. They have assembled a team of physicians and health care professionals from some of the world’s best institutions.

The collective goal is to deliver individually tailored therapies for each of their patients. Since HCM is often a genetically mediated condition, they provide access to genetics testing to patients and their families, if needed. Furthermore, they have access to the national community of HCM specialists and are able to direct family members who do not live locally to their closest reputable HCM center should they require further management.

The Center prides itself in ensuring patients will come away from a consultation empowered by their understanding of HCM. They will be reassured by the knowledge that there is a team of professionals highly trained in the management of their specific condition providing access to the most up to date, evidence based treatments available.
